When 75-year-old James Vernon found himself to be the only thing between a group of youngsters and a knife-wielding attacker, he displayed the perfect combination of quiet civilization and pure jungle. It proved to be exactly what it would take to save the kids lives.

Chris Mintz did what he could to save lives in Roseberg
At this point, there is no way to know how many Mr. Mintz may have saved, but at that point it didn't matter, he did what he could.

Sharon Molloy Shields Child from Dog Attack
Sometimes keeping a promise can be costly, but Ms. Molloy had promised to protect and care for a three-year-old, and that is what she did, regardless of the danger to herself. An attack by a single average dog will rarely lead to serious injuries, but an attack by two large dogs is a tough situation. This lady handled it with courage and determination. You are our hero, Ms. Molloy!

Javier Escalante Saves a Life by NOT Risking His
The story at the link below is a turnabout in many ways for this blog, but it is an important story to tell. Despite all that you might wish you could do, sometimes you just can't! Recognizing the difference, and helping another to do the same, may sometimes be the best that we can do.

Another Theater Shooting Somehow Brings out the Best
That this kind of thing appears to be becoming the norm is very discouraging, but that people still rise to the challenge of protecting one another through it all is exhilarating. Hopefully we will learn more about those involved.

Andrew Crane and Isaac Yow Answer Screams, Foil Kidnapping
When they heard the frantic screams of a young child who was hopelessly chasing the man who kidnapped her brother, these two teens reacted instantly. The kidnapper had to leave the victim in order to escape from the determined young men. When they jumped into the situation, they had no way of knowing if the man was armed or not, they just did what needed to be done. Is this cool or what!

More would have died at Kosher Market if not for Lassana Bathily
This man stayed amazingly cool and clear-headed, hiding others in a freezer along with himself, and even having the presence of mind to turn it off before shutting them all inside. Later he was able to grab a set of needed keys, sneak out, and alert the police! His quiet comment: "This is life." Said another way: "This is what you do!"
Over-the-top cool!
