Dave Briscoe Pulls Unconscious Man from Burning Vehicle

Like so many of those who go to the rescue of someone else, Briscoe basically says that the action was a "no-brainer". He couldn't just ignore someone in trouble.

Thanks!

Kyshaune Lindsay Pulls Paralytic From Burning Home

I love the 15-year-old's bottom line about the rescue:

"It feels kind of good!"

Thanks Kyshaune! It feels kind of good even to read about it!

Travis Boland Pulls Two From Burning Car

(Photo: Courtesy Top Notch Video)

"I did not really think about what I was doing... I just did it."

This is the kind of explanation that we hear time and again when folks take personal action to resuce another from danger. It is this "automatic" response to which another pair of folks owe their lives. Thank you Mr. Boland!

Hollebone and Kidd Spend Nearly 5 Minutes Searching Burning Home

One youth wound up hospitalized after leading the effort to help a neighbor who was known to be still inside her burnning home. The quote at the bottom is one that we hear repeatedly from people like this: "You do what you've got to do."

Thanks for rising to such a frightening challenge, guys! Our prayers go out for young Mr. Kidd.

Bartholomew Honored for Icy Water Rescue

This happened over a year ago, but it is still worth sharing. The folks at the Carnegie organization have been awarding medals (and money!) for a hundred years to people who do just the kind of thing that we cover in this blog. It would certainly seem that they picked a good one this time. You can see more of their heroes at the Carnegie link to the right.

With Flames Climbing Windshield, Shaw and Santaniello Free Trapped Woman

This is another of those stories that makes you proud. The car was actively engaged, and would soon be totally destroyed by the fire, but these guys were not stopping until they got this woman free. To make it even worse, they did it after being awakened at 2 a.m. from a dead sleep!

That is true teamwork!

Peter O'Brien Braves Multiple Threats to Aid a Sheriff's Deputy

O'Brien's reaction to the label "hero" is so common to folks like him who just see themselves as doing the right thing. Even though he could have been killed by either of two attackers or their pitbull, he did not let that stop him from doing the right thing. Mighty heroic for a guy who calls himself "...no hero..."!

Jason Barnes Loses Business to Flood, then Risks Life to Save Another

The speed at which the Ellicott City flood waters were moving made them potentially lethal, but even after recovering from one fall, Barnes refused to leave a woman trapped in her car.

http://www.wbaltv.com/news/toy-shop-owner-risks-life-to-save-woman-from-ellicott-city-flood/40977000

Had any one of the people in this human chain been swept into a hard object, the waters could have easily trapped and inundated them. Although it doesn't look it, this was the real deal.

Wow! Thanks guys!

Brannon Greene Escapes Burning Vehicle, Returns for Driver

This is one of those decisions that is actually made before we even know we have made it. Greene could not keep going when he know that another person was in danger. They both barely escaped in time.

Bravo!

Anonymous Rescuers Pull Man from Burning Car

The anonymous rescuer is a repeated theme all through this blog. People who are determined to do the right thing are usually not doing it to be recognized or thanked. They are doing it because it is the right thing to do.

Thanks guys, even though you aren't looking for it!

Davitt Walsh Pulls 4-month-old From Sinking Car

It is amazing how in the blink of an eye a situation can go from "everyday" to "life-or-death." And there is NO instruction book! When that happened in front of Mr. Walsh, he didn't hesitate. He stripped down and jumped into frigid waters attempting to help a family get clear of their sinking car. He was able to come away with only one, but God bless him, he did all he could.

Will Edwards Singlehandedly Pulls Woman from Burning Car

With the crowd repeatedly warning him to get clear of the car for his own safety, this guy could not bring himself to abandon the woman inside. He kept at his efforts until they succeeded, even as the flames spread. "I wasn't prepared to just leave her there." Wow!

7-year-old Jyoti Chalavadi Saves Her Brother and Sister from the Flames

Nothing is more inspiring and humbling to me than a tiny child recognizing the danger faced by someone else and going to help. The article at the link below is about something that happened over a month ago, but it is no less inspiring. A 7-year-old girl sustained major burns pulling her younger siblings from a burning home. Jyoti, you are my hero!

James Vernon Stops Knife Attack on School Kids

When 75-year-old James Vernon found himself to be the only thing between a group of youngsters and a knife-wielding attacker, he displayed the perfect combination of quiet civilization and pure jungle. It proved to be exactly what it would take to save the kids lives.

Sharon Molloy Shields Child from Dog Attack

Sometimes keeping a promise can be costly, but Ms. Molloy had promised to protect and care for a three-year-old, and that is what she did, regardless of the danger to herself. An attack by a single average dog will rarely lead to serious injuries, but an attack by two large dogs is a tough situation. This lady handled it with courage and determination. You are our hero, Ms. Molloy!

Javier Escalante Saves a Life by NOT Risking His

The story at the link below is a turnabout in many ways for this blog, but it is an important story to tell. Despite all that you might wish you could do, sometimes you just can't! Recognizing the difference, and helping another to do the same, may sometimes be the best that we can do.

Another Theater Shooting Somehow Brings out the Best

That this kind of thing appears to be becoming the norm is very discouraging, but that people still rise to the challenge of protecting one another through it all is exhilarating. Hopefully we will learn more about those involved.

Andrew Crane and Isaac Yow Answer Screams, Foil Kidnapping

When they heard the frantic screams of a young child who was hopelessly chasing the man who kidnapped her brother, these two teens reacted instantly.   The kidnapper had to leave the victim in order to escape from the determined young men.  When they jumped into the situation, they had no way of knowing if the man was armed or not, they just did what needed to be done.  Is this cool or what!

More would have died at Kosher Market if not for Lassana Bathily

This man stayed amazingly cool and clear-headed, hiding others in a freezer along with himself, and even having the presence of mind to turn it off before shutting them all inside.  Later he was able to grab a set of needed keys, sneak out, and alert the police!  His quiet comment: "This is life."  Said another way: "This is what you do!"

Over-the-top cool!
