Mr. Fleetwood was first to react when bullets started pumping into the town meeting. His determination to get another person out of the line of fire resulted in him taking the bullet instead. The most telling comment from the woman he saved is typical of many heroes themselves: "...he did what he had to do to help others." Another witness, Dave Labar, was prepared to enter the line of fire as well. Thank you gentlemen.

Wow! History repeats itself! While Sam Irick gave his life saving others shares the common ancestor of a man once owned a saddleshop in Craig, Elbert Conway Irick, while Dave Fleetwood gave his life saving others shares the common ancestor of a man once owned a pawnshop in Craig, Otis Fleetwood. Irick and Fleetwood. What a crazy world! Both had businesses in the very same street of Yampa Avenue. Amazing!
